Teaching Philosophy

Teaching Philosophy

National Philosophy of Education was created based on the the Five National Principles and national ideology and it was announced to the public in 1988. From this, another philosophy was created as a guideline for the country to produce qualifies teachers and it is known as Teacher Philosophy of Education. These two philosophies act as guidance for the teachers to perform our duties.

For National Philosophy of Education (NPE), it was stated that education is an ongoing effort to produce individuals who are intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, and physically balanced and harmonic, based on a firm belief in and devotion to God. Therefore, we always bear in mind that we need to produce well-balanced individuals when we perform our duties. The aims of National Philosophy of Education are as guidance for teachers to develop and promote education as well as to understand the national education system. Besides, it is as a core to determine the National Education goals and to eliminate misunderstanding, doubt, or dispute in any attempt to perform our duties or educational activities.

Meanwhile, Teacher Philosophy of Education (TPE) explains about the characteristics that are essentials for the teachers to fulfil the national aspiration and Vision 2020. For that reason, the aim of this philosophy is to produce qualified teachers in terms of personal, professional, social, and behavioural practices. As a result, teachers need to have characteristics that are mention in this philosophy in order to help us producing the individuals that are stated in the National Philosophy of Education.

As stated above, both NPE and TPE are the guidelines for the teacher to produce useful and noble Malaysian citizens.

As an English teacher, my aim is to motivate students to begin a personal exploration toward
effective and meaningful communication in English.  Although it is a challenging task as many
of my students hardly use English in their daily life except the six periods in a week during
schooling days.  Students from less advantage social-economy background further hinder the
efforts to pull them through the learning blocks.  Consequently, creative and innovative
teaching strategies appear to be better approaches to help my students.  My students have limited
vocabulary and they learn better through visual ways.  Pictures, videos, interactive teaching
software and online self- assessment help them tremendously.

On the other hand, as a teacher, I strongly believe in modeling.  A teacher’s behavior leave a
great impact on a student’s characteristic development.  Thus, demonstrating values like be kind
and helpful to people around you and have a sense of belonging are crucial and should be
nurtured.

Years later, my students might nor remember what they’ve learned but at least they remember it
was fun learning English, and they remember the values they learned since school days…

I always believe that there’s no ‘unteachable’ students, just yet to find the most suitable way…
